Story of Space Sophora
Space Sophora was named after the Sophora Japonica tree, which has long been considered auspicious and traditionally planted in groups of three in palace grounds or noble courtyards. This space is a new multicultural complex with a gallery, event space, and cafe, located at the end of Deoksugung-gil in Jeongdong, a historic area known as the birthplace of Korea's modern culture.
Space Sophora Gallery regularly organizes, exhibits, and sells excellent works by both domestic and international artists. It serves as a cultural hub not only for art lovers but also for tourists visiting Deoksugung-gil and Jeongdong, as well as for government officials and office workers from nearby City Hall and Gwanghwamun.
On the first floor of Space Sophora, there is a small courtyard where visitors can enjoy coffee and various teas while gazing at Deoksugung Dondeokjeon. The terrace on the second floor is open to cafe customers, offering them beautiful views of Deoksugung Palace as they enjoy their drinks. Additionally, the view lounge, which faces Deoksugung Dondeokjeon, is an event space available for private reservations, providing a unique and special setting for gatherings.
Located in the Jeongdeokwon building, which was once part of the former Gyeongwoongung Palace, Space Sophora takes pride in its significant historical location and leverages this unique aspect to its advantage. It aims to firmly establish itself as a leading cultural complex by continuing to develop and showcase high-quality exhibitions, diverse events, and content that promote Korean culture in a global environment.
Jeongdeokwon 貞德垣
Jeongdeokwon is a newly constructed, modern red-brick building with two basement levels and two stories above ground, completed in 2023. It stands on a historic site that has served various purposes over the centuries. This site is presumed to have been part of Gyeongungung Palace and was once the official residence of Queen Sohye.
Jeongdeokwon preserves the last vestiges of the Korean Empire, which, just before the Japanese occupation, sought to counterbalance Japan’s influence by aligning with powers like Russia, the United States, and the United Kingdom. The old Sophora Japonica tree at the entrance seems to have watched over and safeguarded the long historical narratives of this site.
Now home to Space Sophora, Jeongdeokwon has preserved a precious piece of our history and will become a unique space where past and present converge. Together with Space Sophora, the geographical and historical significance of Jeongdeokwon will shine even more brightly in the future.
